Meeting Report – Diversity Is Our Strength

The theme of club meeting on 25 August was Diversity Is Our Strength. It’s truly spoken one of the most important strengths of Three Kings Toastmasters Club.

A big thanks to Andrew and Liz who took over the role of Timekeeper and Table topic evaluator respectively in view of the absence of original role players.

The word of the night provided by Debbie was “assorted/assortment”, an apt word to describe the diversity of Three Kings Toastmasters Club.

20160825_192439_resizedClare kicked off the prepared speeches telling us that being happy is essential to our cells, health and lives through her career in hospice care. People thought it’s sad to do the job, but to Clare, it’s exciting to hear people revealing what matters most in their lives before death.

20160825_192925_resizedMarie P reminded us “The most important thing is life is not the triumph, but the journey to achieve it” by sharing her journey to New Zealand and her friend Jordan’s life journey being affected, but not restricted by cerebral palsy – a permanent movement disorder.

Maria G talked about the history of eating tortoises and different types of tortoises available. Surprisingly the giant tortoises somehow started to breed even though the last giant tortoises died years ago.

20160825_194548_resizedPeter gave us a nutrition lesson on iron and iron deficiency – the benefits of iron to our health, the consequence of iron deficiency, what food contain high iron and how to improve iron absorption (Vitamin C).

Kevin wrapped up the prepared speeches by educating members on how to select a topic.

20160825_210302_resizedIn table topics, Nico entertained us by saying people was the reason he likes most and dislikes most about his job; Steve believed leading by example and willing to sacrifice were the number 1 qualities in great leaders; Wearing suits and living a successful life was what Charlie wanted since he was a kid; Grant was going to start his new era when his kids leave home; Joy shared her motivation to join toastmasters and she became more brave on the stage since she joined Three Kings; To Sarah, honesty, similar hobbies and values were the most important qualities she seeked in friends.

Rik received the award for completing 10 speeches, and Marie P just completed her 10th speech tonight. Debbi was lucky enough to win the lucky draw sponsored by Chairman Ivo.

Our next meeting is on the 8th of September. See you all next time.
